These kind of hunts are for those hunters who like to be on the move! Never sitting still in one place, always on the go. Hunts are usually done at night while riding around in a vehicle or ATV watching and listening for dogs to hit the scent of hogs. Hunts may be done during the day if the weather is cool enough. Once on the ranch, the guide will drop 4-5 bay dogs on the ground from the vehicle and you will start driving the roads watching and listening to the dogs. When the dogs get on the hogs, the race is on!
Once you’re within striking distance of the bayed up hogs, the guide will grab a catch dog off the vehicle and either turn him loose, or both the guide and hunters walk the catch dog into the bay and then turn him loose. Once the catch dog has latched on, you will go in and either live tie / hobble the hog, or if you choose, stick it with a knife! It’s a rush of adrenaline for the beginner for sure, and still a high for those of us that hunt with dogs!
